Spring’s Early Bloomers

Magnolia Tree

A symbol of healing, Magnolia blooms and foliage have been used to reduce and depression. Elegant blossoms in every shade of pink, soft yellow, and white are among the first to dot the local landscape as a herald of spring. It’s a perfect choice for bold, early color.

Hellebore

Known for its delicate blooms, hellebore symbolizes serenity and tranquility. It has also been used for protection purposes, with its presence believed to ward off negative energy, making it a common choice for gardens who want to guard against malevolent forces. As one of the first perennials to bloom in spring, its return is a welcome sight for the winter weary gardener.

Bleeding Heart

Symbolizing rebirth and renewal, bleeding hearts, with their distinct heart-shaped flowers, are also emblematic of unconditional love. The genus Dicentra boasts a rich history of medicinal use, while in the garden, this perennial has remained a springtime favorite for generations. Combining both beauty and healing properties, it’s brings life to the shady areas of the spring garden.

Take Note

In November 2023, the USDA released an updated Plant Hardiness Zone Map, helping gardeners determine plant suitability. This marks the first update since 2012. In New Hampshire, some zones shifted, with Rochester moving from Zone 5b to Zone 6a. These changes open up opportunities for new plant varieties to thrive, expanding gardening possibilities.
* About half of the country has shifted half a zone – a 5 degree difference in the lowest winter temperatures.
